Sad and disturbing that he would be boo'ed, but as a true professional he never let it bother him
Too bad that it was high and inside
Now there is a great American!
YA THINK??????????????????????????
One person can do a tremendous amount of damage to a country, particularly when that person is elected President. That one person selects a cabinet, appoints judges to the Supreme Court, wields veto power and initiates policy.
Labeling views you don't agree with as "socialist" is nothing but name-calling. If someone doesn't subscribe to your political views, they are a socialist?
And, with all due respect, being "over there" for eight months, while laudable, doesn't necessarily qualify anyone as a foreign policy expert. And I have heard interviews on television with soldiers who served their country in Iraq express the opinion that the troops should come home now. Some who served have even expressed the opinion that we should not have gone there in the first place.
I lived in the Middle East for two years and I disagree with your opinion that dissenting views on the Bush presidency have any connection with socialism.
No matter he is our president. He was on a world wide platform and we acted like children. It is not OK to voice "dirty laundry" this type of a public forum
I was embarassed for our country
Tony
Steve,
I heard many more cheers than booing. I am ex-military and believe in a strong defense. I do believe he is a great president and history will reflect that.
I read your post, I couldn't bring myself to comment. Now I can't stop thinking about it. A divided America is a weaker America. Regardless of whether or not one agrees with the individual in office, we are all still Americans and need to support our country, our troops, and yes, even our President.
If we had not gone to war and thus suffered more homeland attacks, people would be screaming about that too. No matter what, you are not going to please everyone. In the end, the only thing that should matter is protecting our country.
As a parent, I would have been disgusted if my children heard the booing. We should be teaching them how great our country is and that the President of the United States is a very respected position. This behavior showed absolutely zero respect for our country. An embarrassing moment for Americans, by so-called Americans. Sad.
Nancy, America was "divided" when Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter and Clinton were under attack too.
Protecting our country includes protecting our economy. If Bush had been half as concerned about that during the last eight years, he wouldn't be listening to boos.
Bush won't be remembered for trying to "please everyone". He will be remembered for the financial market crisis we're in now, for the over 220 mortgage companies nationwide that have gone out of business, for the Bear Stearns bailout, and for the surge in foreclosures across America.
Republicans gloated over the high interest rates of the late 1970's under Jimmy Carter, but now they expect the public to look the other way when it comes to the economic crisis under Bush's watch. That's hypocrisy.
Booing isn't the best way for the public to express their displeasure. They only need to wait until November to pull the voting booth lever and vote for a change.
But the funny part is who just got caught lying??? poor old hillary!!!
Bush is the one with the 31 per cent approval rating, making him one of the most unpopular presidents since World War II. Bush got caught lying about weapons of mass destruction. I don't think he's laughing about his popularity ratings right now.
Those pathetic French people who put Louis XVI in prison and sent him to the guillotine were pretty disrespectful too.
I guess losing your home or your job and watching the economy go into the toilet makes some people childish.
The comment about blaming everything on George Bush is interesting. I remember that Ronald Reagan's entire campaign was based on holding Jimmy Carter personally responsible for everything that "happened under his watch". That included the failed helicopter rescue attempt in Iran of the embassy hostages. Carter didn't fly the helicopters himself and they crashed because the military folks were using craft that weren't made to fly under sandy desert conditions, but it was all Carter's fault. Carter was also held personally responsible for the high interest rates of the late 1970's.
Now, GOP loyalists get really upset when you apply the same standard to the little guy with the big ears in Washington. But if a president is responsible for what happens under his watch, then Bush must bear the responsibility for the failures of his administration over the last eight years. Bush also had the support of a majority voting bloc in Congress, making his vetos override-proof. So the GOP has to be 100% in the spotlight for their failed economic policies that not only go back nearly a decade but were built on the foundation of Reaganomics.
Some of the commenters above want to see Bush receive 100% of the credit for dealing with 9/11 and at the same time they think he deserves 0% of the blame for the economy. That is absolutely ridiculous.
Are those commenters claiming that Bush is the only president who would have responded to the 9/11 crisis? History simply doesn't support that claim.
You know, one of the reasons we supposedly invaded Iraq was to get rid of a totalitarian dictator (Saddam Hussein) whom we criticized for stifling free speech and opposition.
So why do the president's loyal followers get so irritated when those who disagree with Bush exercise that freedom of speech in America?
Carol, you act as if you are suprised to see any political debate or differing opinions on a post about the president. Were you expecting to see only opinions that mirror your own?
Carol, when I re-read what I wrote above, I did not make any comment about what your opinions are.
You did, however, refer to those who made negative comments about the current presidential administration as whiners. That is nothing more than name-calling. I assume the name-calling was meant to ridicule those who are not fans of the president. That's not exactly what one would call free speech.
The ActiveRain guidelines are clear about personal attacks being forbidden here. I believe it's possible to discuss political issues without calling names.
Gas four bucks a gallon, eggs three dollars a dozen, milk five dollars a gallon, foreclosures and evictions skyrocketing, oil company and home lending execs taking home millions in bonuses, bankruptcy filings in staggering record numbers, dollar worth nothing in asia and europe, our presence in the middle east unwanted, casinos are popping up everywhere and sending families to the poorhouse, property taxes are raging, municipalities are losing revenue because of real estate declining values and default, real estate agents are retiring licenses en masse, large brokerages are shutting down and leaving agents insolvent and broke, hundreds of lenders bankrupt, inadequate health insurance for our citizens, terrible medical care and malpractice, the country in the worst recession in history, children and adults are starving and dying and living in the streets and in their cars....what do you think?
Job 5:7
Thank you Matthew. Finally, a voice of reason. Unfortunately w/ popularity (or lack thereof) comes a lot of uneducated bandwagoners to fuel the fire. I mean that for both parties. I hear so many people say things and then when you ask them to elaborate, they cannot. Whether it be celebrity influence or media influence, not many take the time to stop and read the facts. November should be interesting!
Thank you for your service to our country too. I think people forget what people give up to serve our country. It is most appreciated.
Thank you for your service to our country too Mathew. As a navy vet the sacrifice of long sea duty took its toll on me as well.
I just have one question for all of the readers. Where in the constitution of the United States Of America does it say that we as a nation have a right to occupy or invade other nations?
Steve,
At the risk of sounding puffed up or a know it all, the Constitution grants us certain rights and and dictates how the branches of government should interact. Aside from congress having the ability to wage war, the constitution says very little about military affairs. However, precedence would dictate that the US has invaded other countries when its interests are threatened. This is visible in several instances dating all the way back to the war of 1812 (where we tried to invade/liberate Canada). Texas was a state created via a war of occupation. Panama was invaded and occupied for the purpose of protecting the canal. South Korea, Japan, and Germany are still being occupied. The point being, just because a right or provision is not included in the constitution does not mean that it is not available. Precedence and prudence are what is required when deciding to use military force, and any time military force is used it is a pox on the face of humanity for all those associated. Unfortunately, wars occur and their costs are eternal. I would not want to have the weight of those lost in war on my shoulders regardless of the cause. I feel sorry for those who make those decisions, and choose not to judge them for fear one day I might be in their place.
It seems odd that anytime this country elects a leader, whether legitimately or by election fraud, from an oil producing state, aggression escalates between the United States and other oil producing nations. Regrettfully, Israel always gets stuck in the middle of the equation by the incumbent and, sadly, anti-American sentimentality and anti-semitism becomes the lame excuse 'by- product' of the administration attempting to justify a presence in those regions . i.e., Johnson from Texas with the Yom Kippur war in 1967, Bush sr., from Texas, with the Persian gulf in 1991, Bush jr. from Texas with Iraq, 2002 and potentially, Iran, to present day. Along with these aggressions come the perpetration of an unhealthy economic climate, principally railed by energy concerns and unrealistic spikes in the costs of fuel which contributes to recession. In the last forty years, no president that has served this country from any state other than Texas has battled for oil producing regions. And what is the cash crop of Texas?...... That's right boys and girls....black gold...Texas Tea...none other than that slippery viscous liquid that's killed more of our children and is more slippery than the mountebanks who hawk it. The blood of our country is swathed in it because of these flamboyant deceivers who have fleeced America. All Texans are not bad. My parents and my sisters live in that state, although they're from Tennesse, and I love them, and I love Texas as well; the Better Business Bureau should be contacted about some of the politicians that do business there.
We produce a lot of cotton in Tennesse, but if Al had rightfully been president, I don't think he would have invaded Calcutta for the Madras.
By the way, I spent a year in the middle east at my own expense working to help agricultural and scientific efforts. I wasn't sent there with a gun. I took my guitar.
The vile Nazi leader Hermann Goering, Commander-in-Chief of the Luftwaffe, President of the Reichstag, Prime Minister of Prussia and Hitler's designated successor, the second man in the Third Reich, once said;
"It's easy to get the people to do the bidding of our leaders. You just lie to them and say that they're being attacked, and then you denounce the pacifists as traitors".

Thank you for your heartfelt comment! Steve
Just curious... if someone barges into your home to hurt you, would you reach for your guitar or your gun? If you found out that that there were more planned attacks on your home, would you go find them & play Mister Nice Guy in hopes you could win them over? Would you do nothing and just sit around and wait for them? Or would you plan ahead and find means to protect yourself and do your best to prevent any harm from coming to you and your family?
Nancy, I think your comment was right on!!! I tried to read all the posts, but find that, as expected, the reviews are divided and decided to abstain. You will never make everyone happy! Clever on your part, Steve. I know you expected this response.

Nancy asked:" ....if someone barges into your home to hurt you, would you reach for your guitar or your gun."
It depends on whether or not I had to put them to sleep or kill them before the cops arrived. Paranoia's not part of my life. Neither are crooked politicians. I'm secure; sorry if your not. You might try unplugging your television.
Carol, The past is just that.... the past
Lets focus today on whats happening now.
We're paying for that "success" of the past five to seven years now. That "success" was built on unregulated mortgage lending, on people borrowing without qualifications or documentation. The good times were a-rollin' until America became overbuilt and over-leveraged.
Carol, if your Republican friends want to take credit for that, they certainly may. I've already given Mr. Bush credit for presiding over this disaster.
STANDING OVATION FOR ERIC!
Every administration in my memory has had massive problems and success. America moves forward under its own momentum and seems to move to the left little by little. Blaming the president for the problems is overstating his power. Congress was in on most if not all of the polices as were many advisors and American opinion polls. Now Congress is stepping in to cure the mortgage problem along with the president. Another joint effort.
The good news is that our country has the will to make big changes in direction when necessary. Most of us are better off than we were 10 years ago, 20 years ago, etc. We are the envy of the world in culture and wealth. I just wish we liked each other a little better.
