Could you imagine the Un-United States Of America?...This story blew my mind. It brings me memories of that movie with patrick swayze and charlie sheen in "Red Dawn"
Click below to read this story featured in the wall street journal. Of course in my opinion this is doomsday thinking at its worst, however Panarin does make strong points regarding American policies that should be heeded and changed hopefully in the upcoming administration. The part that bothers me the most is a the Professor's prediction of economic decline, and moral degradation will trigger a civil war next fall and the collapse of the dollar. Just when you thought the foreclosure crisis was bad enough, then something like this could happen.
Active Rainers: What are your thoughts if this happened and how would you adapt?

Stop reading the paper!
Sounds aweful... certainly not something I was expecting to read about tonight ! Wow, my goodness!
Thanks for sharing. :(
Kari said, "Stop reading the paper!"
Steve says, this is not just any paper....It's the WALL STREET JOURNAL!"
Maybe it's a sign of the times when the wall street journal does become an ordinary paper, sounds like something from TMZ or A&E to me.
Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho would become a new republic, led by Cheney from his infamous "undisclosed location" [Jackson, WY]. Plenty of guns, cowboys, farmland, gas, and coal. Good luck to the rest of you...
thanks for your comments Mel & Tim
The Wall Street Journal is reporting this man's preposterous theory, and also reporting how the Kremlin has jumped on it- can you spell propaganda? Someone better call Governor Palin and let her know Alaska is going back to Russia!! I'm kind of surprised they even wasted the ink. You've got to be kidding.
Steve,
Thanks for sharing. I remember reading the book by Dr. Riva Batra, "The Great Depression of 1990" which at the time made a lot of sense. It indicated that worldwide economies ran 70 year cycles. What they didn't have in 1930 was a fed and central bank that could manipulate quickly interest rates and money supply which in my opinion staved off the predicted depression effects until now. I could be wrong in my memory of the book since I read it in like 1988, but it seems that our memory is a memory of experience. Most people who were adults in the Great Depression have since passed on and so their memories are no longer available to guide younger generations. We don't remember the challenges of the 1990's so we don't make the same types of decisions which would keep us out of another depression.
I think the theory is a bit far fetched, but ultimately anyone with half a brain knows that the U.S. and its debt is too much for our country to handle. And assuming that the U.S. won't go into World War III to keep our independence from our creditors, it may be that this scenario is the best possible outcome given our levels of debt.
What is interesting is that one of our largest creditors, Saudi Arabia and the Oil States are not the influencers. However if the world economies go into a tail spin and the U.S. dollar collapses then the dollars that they hold in the form of debt won't mean much anyway.
Definitely thought provoking.
All the Best,

Steve: I think all four of the new "Republics" need some adjusting, and might see reasons to extend it to at least six, maybe seven. But what this idea brings to mind is the almost night and day differences in ideologies seemingly present in certain areas of the country.
I could see Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, the northern half of Illinois, the northern half of Indiana, and the northern half of Ohio being a Republic of it's own. What an interesting idea they have put forth. Thanks so much for sharing... I am going to read the entire article.
Oh, Dear!
I think this is all of bunch of crazy cow dung!
Let's all go find our 50's bomb shelters.
Let's plant, but only things that will last, like potatoes!
Let's can everything! Let's conserve all our water!
All of these are a very good ideas! Except for the bomb shelter thing, I guess?
It is time to re-evaluate, but not to go totally nuts! We have squirrels for that!

We here in Canada are already getting ready to conquer Alaska and the pacific NW states, we might take Hawaii too if we can round up a boat or two.
When I spend a lot of time on the real estate blogs in New York you can really get your mind wrapped up in all of the doomsday scenarios. you never know but seems a little far fetched to me.
Wow!
While he spend a bunch of time doing this and makes some great points I just don't have the time and energy to debate his points.
Going back to do something to make some money.
Happy New Year
Tony
Steve - I think that Russian professor is crazy. I really don't see it happening.
Sounds utterly absurd!! We will come back from the edge and revive our former world status by 2010!!
Steve, I find it interesting how the states were split.
That is just crazy! I heard about it on Fox News this morning and thought that guy was nuts. And to top it off it will happen in 2010, that is about 1 year away.
I think that the dollar collapse is very possible but I don't see the US breaking up. I don't see that people think that differently across the country that they will fight each other. I also don't see other countries being able to beat our military.
Civil unrest could be huge if our dollar becomes worthless and most people can't buy necessities. One encouraging thing I saw back in September when Atlanta ran out of gas for two weeks was that people were very calm about it. They just cut back on their activities until more gas was found. It was easy to do because everyone knew there was plenty of gas not too far away.
If people can't find food, it might be completely different though. You see how quickly the grocery stores get emptied right before a snow storm. I'd say that when the SHTF, you'll have around 5 days before stores are empty. Then what are you going to do? That's the big unknown. Most people not only live paycheck to paycheck, but also just take for granted that the grocery store will always be fully stocked so their household has a just in time food inventory system. It doesn't hurt to be prepared. I'd rather be ridiculed as being a doom and gloom nut case than listen to my kids tell me that they are hungry.
To all that posted, thank you for your comments...this blog was posted because of the story that the wall street journal chose to run it. I personally do not believe in this conspiracy theory. just found it amusing.
Don't beat up on him or the WSJ.
Its not the first time this has been studied or predicted.
Just look at how this nation votes! If we don't do something to find American common ground, there won't be an America as we know it. The left wants to control everything, the right wants freedom for everything and there is not much common ground there.
I don't want to see it happen, but it very well could. The last time I saw a study done like this, it was about 10 years ago and included Canadian provences in the mix. They were projecting about 6 countries.
Just google "separatist movements" or independence movements in America. You'll get an eye full.
If the economy blows up, the makings of a revolution are in place. That's not me being survivalist, its being familiar with history.
Check out the issues in the 30s with the depression. Communism and Nazism were gaining big followings.
It has been said that society will fall apart when we give equal weight to the voice of the idiot, the uneducated the lunatic fringes of society and treat each one as if they were main stream thoughts. America thrives on the fringes of society, otherwise papers like the Enquirer or Tabloids would not exist. No one first asked the question is he paid by the communist propaganda ministry? NEXT
Well for starters- the break down on the map above makes no sense at all except geographically. If you look at where some of those states are politically AIN'T NO WAY they would go together.
That is my whole point Jim! to stimulate debate! great comment.
mike: being born and raised in North Texas, I appreciate where you are coming from as well.
Steve:
Read, "Conquer the Crash" and "Crest of the Tidal Wave" both by Robert Prechter.
He predicted things that were not awful obvious to project towards. Anyone can say bad times brings turmoil. Read someone that has been right, yes anything is possible, we learned that this year.
Nostradamus also did predictions, the the Delphic Sybil of Rome too made dire predictions.
The Mayan calender ends in 2012. I can go on and on.
Richard
richard: its funny you mentioned the Mayan calander ends 2012. I had a lady tell me that earlier today.
The one thing that is always prevalent when the going gets tough in the US of A is that the tough get going. We ALWAYS rise to the occasion. That is and will be our legacy. I'm a bit scared about the future, but I have faith that we are based on great principals and that we will always help each other. And I am way not naive. Trust is not my forte. But I do believe in US! (that is "us" , not U.S.)
Dee: I never hope or belief in the US even though the current administration has left our country in a huge cesspool of problems.
January 20th, 2009 is a new era that will make us all proud to be americans again
Lets hope the Dalai-Bama can Help!

Steve: After the ridiculous Republican showing of totally voting against the Stimulus Package in the House... it already appears we are two different countries. Maybe this wouldn't be such a bad idea after all. It would just formalize it.
I hear ya Karen....not a pretty site today in the house
